Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Vs Timeless 20% C + E Ferulic Acid Serum

When Skinceuticals C E Ferulic launched a few years ago, it was the first product to contain the amazing combination of L-Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), Alpha Tocopherol (Vitamin E) and Ferulic Acid which does wonders for the skin. Since then, lots of brands have tried to replicate its success by launching their own versions, promising the same benefits for a fraction of the cost. Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid is one of the most common.

L-Ascorbic Acid is the most powerful form of vitamin C used in skincare – it can fight free radicals, boost collagen production and has skin-lightening properties. The Duke antioxidant patent outlines that formulation parameter required for effective delivery of vitamin c to the skin: 1) pure l-Ascorbic acid; 2) an acidic pH working the 2.0-3.5 pH range and; 3) a concentration between 10% – 20%.

Skinceuticals holds a patent for the ideal formulation with maximum rate of absorption with the least likelihood of irritation at a low pH (2.5 – 3.0). Competitors are able to create Ascorbic acid serums at a pH of 2.0 – 2.4 or 3.1 – 3.5. The issue with Ascorbic acid is that it is very unstable and quickly degrades becoming ineffective when exposed to light and air, if not well stabilised. The pH for the Timeless serum is 2.4 which means it will do the job but because it’s not properly stabilised, it will degrade quickly and the pH of the product changes over time which means it won’t penetrate the skin after some time. The Skinceuticals serum on the other hand, stays stable and does not lose efficacy even after one year.

If you will like to splurge on a product you can guarantee its stability and efficacy, go for Skinceuticals C E Ferulic (N74,000). If you’re on a budget, willing to try a product that may oxidize and lose its efficacy quickly, ready to store it in the fridge and throw away after 3 months of use, whether or not it’s finished, go for Timeless 20% C + E Ferulic (N16.500).
