La Prairie’s origin can be traced back to 1931 from the famous La PrairieClinic in Montreux, Switzerland by Dr Paul Niehans. The brand offers luxurious skin care lines using platinum, gold, white caviar and caviar.
“Remastered with this new caviar incarnation, Skin Caviar Luxe Cream goes beyond what was previously thought possible – a rich moisturizing cream that offers a unique dimension of sensorial indulgence paired with never-before-seen lifting and firming. Skin appears more supported, tightened and toned, with a heightened feeling of tautness and suppleness.” – La Prairie Website

HILARY SAYS REVIEW:
Looking at the ingredients list, the first 14 ingredients are solvents, emollients, humectants, slip agents, texture enhancers, thickeners (only the emollients and humectants are beneficial to the skin, the others are for the product itself). Then comes Algae Extract and Malt extract, which are skin-soothing agents and have antioxidant properties; followed by Shea Butter. If there’s nothing lifting and firming in the first 17 ingredients, I don’t know if there’s any use looking at the other ingredients to be honest.
Somewhere after comes the “star” ingredient – Caviar Extract, which is meant to the lifting and firming but there’s no independent research to prove that caviar has that effect on the skin. Studies carried out have been by companied producing caviar-based ingredients. The proved benefits of caviar come from eating them, rather than applying them topically.
It contains Retinyl Palmitate (the least powerful retinoid), but at a very low percentage. It has to be converted to retinol, then retinoic acid before it can do anything. So it needs to be in the product at a higher percentage to have a firming effect on the skin.
It is also heavily fragranced, which can sensitize the skin. You will definitely get supple and well moisturized skin with this cream but I don’t know about the “never-seen-before lifting and firming”. It’s definitely not worth that price tag.
